My favorite summer recipes, combined with a few transition recipes to ring in the end of summer and cooler fall vibes. These recipes are comforting, simple and delicious – with a little something for everyone.
In all honesty, the month of July was a blur. Its like I was just writing the blog on 31 recipes to make in July, the entire month flew by so fast and I don’t even know where and how we are in the second half of this year. Having said that, the weather seems to be keeping things very hot and sweaty with all of us being in a massive heat wave in different parts of the world at the moment. I have listed out some of my favorite recipes to make this month and hopefully they inspire you to get into the kitchen.
When it comes to fruit and veg this month, keep an eye out for the best local produce you can get your hands on in the market. Currently you should have easy and plenty of access to cucumbers, zucchini, corn, green beans, tomatoes, cabbage, beetroot, broccoli, celery, bell peppers, fennel cauliflower and other summer squashes. These are great for fresh salads, starters, sandwiches, quiches, pies and puffs.
As for fruits you will start seeing alot of stone fruit like peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries and apricots. However blackberries, muskmelon, raspberries, apples, kiwis and other berries too. This is the month to stock up on those mangoes – back home in Bombay we would buy a dozens of them in August, make pulp and freeze them to use all through the year for juice, smoothies and other recipes. But if there was one fruit to use this month it must be peaches. You will find the best in season now so get slicing, jamming, cooking, baking with it.
In reference to important food events to keep in mind this month, we have international beer day & Takoyaki day on August 8th. Indian independence day and lemon meringue pie day on August 15th. ALSO, it is the queen aka Julia Child’s birthday on 15th August, so get your favorite recipes cooking/baking to celebrate her contribution to the food industry. The world celebrates potato day on August 19th and eat a peach day on 22nd August which is a good reminder that peaches are at its peak in this season. Ending with two important events on the 30th of August, toasted marshmallow day and Bacon day.
