The best and easiest garlic bread butter spread recipe that is perfect on any bread, use it as a marination and it makes for a simple crowd pleasing vegetarian appetizer.
Before we get into the recipe I double dare you to say the name of the recipe fast at least 3 times. LOL! I don’t know why I haven’t seen this around but making garlic bread spread is definitely worth every single minute of your time (and it doesn’t take that much time to make). Take a little time to make a batch of this garlic bread spread and store it in a jar, place in the fridge and you can spread it over toast, make freshly baked garlic bread, add cheese to make cheesy garlic bread, spoon it over grilled steak, use it as a marinating for your grilled/roast chicken or make buttered garlic veggies and shrimp with it.
I have made this recipe the way I like it which is without mayonnaise and most garlic bread recipes use mayo in it. I prefer using greek yogurt and it has a better flavor too. But we will get to the ingredients in a bit. The beauty about this recipe is that it is totally customizable and very yummy – to not mention a perfect make ahead situation to have on hand that can be useful all through the week, anytime you need it. So lets get to it.
Garlic bread spread is basically the garlic butter mixture that is spread on the bread before baking. It is an easier way to have access to garlic bread on repeat as and when needed. Make it and store it in a jar in the fridge for over a week and use it as you like.
Garlic bread is a popular appetizer/snack recipe that is made with garlic butter and bread. The garlic butter is usually made of garlic, butter, fresh and dry herbs, salt, pepper, cheese and mayonnaise. However the cheese and mayo are optional. This is spread over bread and baked either on its own or with cheese and is best served hot.
You can find garlic bread in most Italian restaurants where they. Serve pizza. However it is mainly found all over Italy and most countries. It is popular and a very simple appetizer/starter recipe to make and eat so most restaurants today (Italian or not) serve garlic bread on their menu.
It has fresh herbs, dry herbs, butter, garlic – whats not to like? The bread is perfectly golden and toasted that has crispy buttery edges and a soft garlic scented center. It is one of the best comfort food recipes to make.
Garlic bread is commonly served with pasta but you can serve it any Italian dish. I have served it with chicken, seafood and steak. Honestly you can serve it with anything you like. You can also serve it as a starter or appetizer on its own.
To make this garlic bread butter spread we need butter, garlic, fresh parsley, dried herbs like oregano and basil, greek yogurt, parmesan, pepper and salt. I made this garlic bread on sliced hot dog rolls but it is delicious with any bread.
The equipment you need to make this recipe is a bowl and rubber spatula, I like to mince the garlic with a microplane grater but you can use a knife to cut the garlic extremely fine. For make a paste with it as well. I have chopped the fresh parsley with a knife. To make the garlic bread we need a butter knife to spread it out and I baked it in the oven over a baking tray lined with baking paper.
There are many ways to customize this recipe, if you prefer using mayonnaise, leave out the yogurt. I like using parmesan cheese to make this spread but you can use finely grated cheddar as well. Better yet, use mozzarella as well. As for the herbs you can use any herbs you like and substitutes the ones you don’t prefer. I would suggest using herbs such as fresh basil, tarragon, coriander, dill, thyme or rosemary. Don’t go crazy with the herbs though as this is a garlic butter and not a herb butter. If you feel the garlic is too much, you can reduce the amount but I prefer a strong garlic butter. To keep this place based use a plant based butter, yogurt and cheese. I have used a salted butter but you can use any you like.
In a mixing bowl add the butter and stir it until pale and creamy- around 2 minutes. Add the minced garlic, fresh parsley, dried herbs, paper, salt, greek yogurt, parmesan cheese and stir will. It is done. Store it in a jar and label it, place in the fridge and use as needed.
Preheat the oven to 180 Deg C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Slice your hot dog rolls into half length ways. Spread 1 tbsp of the mixture over the bread and spread it evenly. At this post you can leave it as it is or top it with cheese. Place on the baking tray and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and crispy on the edges. If baking with the cheese, keep an eye on the bread as it should not burn. Remove from the oven, cut and serve while still hot.
This garlic butter is versatile and works well with sliced bread as well. I would suggest using a lesser amount, maybe 1-2 tsp of the butter as the bread is thinner the garlic butter should not be too strong. Bake it for 4-6 minutes in the oven until golden and the edges are crispy. Serve it hot. If you do not have an oven, place the bread spread and cheese side up in a sauté pan and cover with a lid, on low heat. Cook for 1-2 mins with lid and 2 minutes without the lid until the bottom is crispy.
YES! After you spread the garlic butter over the bread, load it with your favorite melting cheese and cook for 10-15 minutes until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted. If your cheese is frozen, you can wrap/cover the bread in baking paper or aluminum foil and cook for 5 minutes to help the cheese soften quicker. Then continue baking without the covering until golden and crispy.
Serve it with pasta like my lazy girl spinach pasta, ham and peas pasta or the Mac and cheese pasta. Or serve it with my shepherds pie as well. I would suggest serving it with any Italian or continental main course dish. You could serve it as a starter/vegetarian recipe on its own. I love using this butter to make a quick and easy garlic butter shrimp. You can use it to grill chicken or add a spoon over grilled steak as well when serving. You can use it to sauté vegetables to give them more flavor. The uses are endless.
The garlic bread spread can be stored in the fridge for 10 days. I would suggest storing it in the freezer if you are storing it longer – it keeps well for 1 month. You can also spoon into an ice cube tray and freeze them into smaller portions, then transfer to a zip lock bag and store it in the freezer for convenience.
