A one pot fudge brownie base that is topped with coffee soaked biscuits and a creamy mascarpone frosting that is dusted with cocoa powder. The perfect coffee and chocolate dessert recipe.
If you are a coffee and chocolate lover then this is the recipe for you. I saw the tiramisu brownies by the boy who bakes and I was inspired to try my hand at it. Now I have made many brownie recipes and my most popular brownie recipe is my crackle top fudge brownies that have the perfect shiny crusty top the trick to which are baed on beating your eggs and sugars until pale and fluffy. However the these brownies are my ONE POT fudge brownie recipe. Yes. You read that right.
What makes this brownies a tiramisu brownies recipe are the layers that go on top of the brownies. We soak biscuits in black coffee and layer them top of the warm brownies and squish them down a little. It is topped with a creamy mascarpone frosting and dusted with cocoa powder. The combination of coffee and chocolate is unlike other as coffee enhances the flavor of chocolate but the addition of the mascarpone just ties it all together. They are rich fudge brownie squares that are so simple but you could just as well use a box brownie mix that you prefer to make these tiramisu brownies recipe easy. Lets get to it.
Tiramisu is an Italian dessert that is elegant and rich. It is a layered dessert recipe that is made with lady finger cookies/savoyardi sponge biscuits, espresso or strong black instant coffee, mascarpone cheese, eggs, sugar, whipping cream, coffee liqueur and cocoa powder. This recipe can be made eggless or without alcohol but the ingredients listed above are the authentic ingredients used to make it.
Traditionally it does have alcohol, so recipes call for marsala wine, dark rum, coffee liqueur etc. however, today you can find a variety of recipes without it.
The recipe consists of raw eggs in some cases (where the eggs have not been tempered over the double boiler) which might not be safe for consumption for kids, pregnant women or people with sensitive stomachs.
Tiramisu most often than not is made as a pudding layered in a large casserole pot. However you can make it in a cake mold and chill it overnight. If made correctly it will release and had its shape to create a cake. Alternatively you can use genoise or vanilla stone cake layers to create a tiramisu cake. Some recipe suggest using gelatin in the mascarpone to make it stable enough to hold its shape.
Brownies are rich chocolate bars that are filled with cocoa powder to create an intense flavor. They can are most often than not fudgy in texture, have a crunchy exterior and soft on the inside.
To make brownies at home are simple not only because of the way they are made but because they use very simple ingredients to bake them. Brownies are made with butter, brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour, cocoa powder and salt. Some recipe call for more dark chocolate chips or chunks, walnuts, coffee etc.
There are 3 types of brownies, cakey, fudgy, chewy. Cakey brownies are light and fluffy. Fudgy brownies are gooey and dense. Chewy brownies are tender and moist but more of a combination between cakey and fudge brownies.
Fudge brownies have a higher fat to dry ingredients ratio as compared to cakey ones.
Tiramisu brownies are made up of 3 layers, a fudge tiramisu brownie layer, biscuit soaked in coffee layer and a mascarpone cream layer. The flavors come together to create the perfect tiramisu flavors including coffee and mascarpone with the addition of cocoa powder.
Butter, brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, vanilla, cocoa powder, flour, salt, instant coffee.
Digestive biscuits, black coffee
Mascarpone cream, whipping cream, vanilla, icing sugar, instant coffee
I have used a one pot brownie recipe that is chewy and fudgy. But you can use my crackle top brownie recipe or you could use your favorite brownie recipe as long as it bakes in an 8×8 inch tin. I would not judge you for using your favorite box mix brownie as well. To keep this recipe eggless make an eggless brownie recipe.
Traditionally we need lady finger cookies to make tiramisu and you could use it here however I have used digestive biscuits as I didn’t want a huge biscuit layer. We need strong black coffee to soak the biscuits in order to soften them to create the tiramisu like texture.
You cannot skip the mascarpone cheese as it is essential to make tiramisu and there is no substitute for it.
To make the brownies we need a heavy bottom pot with a whisk, the brownies are baked in an 8×8 inch tin lined with baking paper. You could use a larger pan but it would bake for a lesser amount of time and you would get a thinner brownie. To make the black coffee for soaking the biscuits we need a mixing bowl and spoon. For the mascarpone cream we need a bowl, whisk/electric beater and an offset spatula.
Start by preheating the oven to 180℃, line an 8×8 inch tin with baking paper and set aside. Brownie layer – start by melting the butter in the heavy sauce pot on low heat with the chocolate. Once melted, add the instant coffee powder and whisk. Add the vanilla, brown sugar, castor sugar and whisk again. Add the eggs one at a time, whisk well between each egg. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder and salt and whisk together until combined. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 20-22 minutes until the top is just set and the bottom is baked through. If a tooth pick is inserted into the it will not come out clean, it will have wet sticky crumbs – not raw batter. Remove the brownies from the oven.
Make the black coffee and dunk the digestive biscuits into the coffee and top the hot brownies with it. Cut pieces to create a full layer of he soaked biscuit, allow to cool completely. To make the mascarpone cream we start by dissolving the instant coffee in water and set aside. In a mixing bowl add the whipping cream and beat until soft peaks. Add the mascarpone, icing sugar, vanilla and whisk well until stiff peaks. Add the coffee and whisk again. Pour it over the cooled brownies and even out the layer. Dust with cocoa powder and slice into squares.
They are best served with a cup of coffee but I love them with milk as well. They are the perfect tea cake recipe. Simple, delicious, elegant and very yummy. You could also serve them with an espresso martini or better yet, serve them with an iced mocha latte.
The layered brownies can be stored in an air tight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. I would not suggest freezing these brownies. They cannot be reheated in the microwave as the mascarpone frosting will melt.
