Welcome to my brand new Christmas recipe series where I make foods/recipes from my favourite Christmas movies. We are on the fifth movie recipe with A Boy Called Christmas and Christmas Chocolates. If you missed the previous movies, check out them out in my recipes page.

A Little Back Story To Christmas Movies…

Growing up I loved decorating the house in November for Christmas. Once it hit 15th November, my tree and lights were up, I might have taken time to put everything else up as the month progressed but the tree and lights set the mood and the vibes were in full swing. I would put off all the other lights in the house, in the evening and turn on the festive lights. Switch on my favorite Christmas movie and in those days we needed to have CD’s, which I must say I did. Not much has changed since. I get started with my Christmas movies the moment the tree and lights are up. As I’ve grown up, I have noticed the food scenes in these movies with more intent and honestly I love them so much it inspired me to recreate some of these recipes. Hence I am here at the brink of a new series and so excited to share my love for Christmas movies and their food scenes with you.

Christmas chocolates & A boy called Christmas?

I watched this movie in 2021 when it came out on Netflix and I absolutely LOVED it! There is a scene in the movie where the little boy is getting gifts ready for Christmas Eve for all the kids and they are making wooden toys, clothes, books and sweets. There is a specific scene where they make these round chocolates wrapped in golden wrappers – in that moment I realized I would love to receive a box of those cute chocolates and so I decided to make these chocolates to give away as gifts. In saying this I didn’t want to spend hours making them or a fortune on ingredients so I made an easy shortcut recipe that is simple but elegant.

What are Christmas chocolates?

Christmas chocolates are chocolates you can give as sweets or gifts to family and friends. They can be dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate. They can be solid chocolate or filled with a variety of flavors like caramel sauce, cookie butter, pistachio butter or any other filling like homemade mincemeat as well. They can also be truffles or any chocolate confectionery item. This recipe is the simplest and easiest homemade chocolate recipe you can make. You don’t need to make them only during Christmas but all year round however they are perfect as edible gifts this time of year.

What ingredients do you need to make these Christmas chocolates?

We need dark chocolate to make these chocolates. Now you can use anything above 60% dark chocolate. You can use any chocolate you prefer eating, I used Lindt. For the fillings I have used salted caramel sauce (mine is homemade but you can use store bought), lotus spread (aka cookie butter) and mincemeat filling. You can use pistachio spread, any nut butter you like or any fillings you prefer. I have used a little olive oil in the melted chocolate as we are not tempering it so the chocolate will get firm faster and have a snap once chilled. A little sea salt flakes on top goes a long way.

What equipment do you need to make these Christmas chocolates?

To melt the chocolate we need a bowl and spoon. I have melted it in the microwave you can use a double boiler as well but you don’t need it. I have set the chocolates in a Christmas tree shaped silicon mould but you can use any mould you have. You can use a brush to coat the mould or a tea spoon as well. The chocolates need to be set in the freezer/fridge.

How to make these Christmas chocolates?

We start by melting the dark chocolate in a bowl in the microwave. I like doing this in 20 second intervals until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Add the olive oil and stir to combine. Add a little teaspoon worth of the melted chocolate in the mould and spread it around as thin as possible. We don’t want any gaps/spaces in the bottom as when we add the filling it shouldn’t leak out. Once the mould is coated with the melted chocolate, place in the freezer for 5 minutes. Once it is set, add the fillings into the mould and level it out. Cover the top with the remaining melted chocolate and smooth it out. Place in the freezer and let it set for 10 -15 minutes. Remove the chocolates from the mould, wrap in golden foil wrappers and transfer to a platter.

Serving and storing these Christmas chocolates?

You can serve these chocolates after a meal or with some tea and coffee. Wrap these chocolates in a box and gift them to family and friends during the holidays. If you are storing these chocolates for a long time, make sure to store them in the fridge in an air tight box, when ready to use wrap them up and serve as required.
