This Italian dessert is made with coffee soaked Savoiardi biscuits, layered with a rich mascarpone filling and topped with cocoa powder. It is a simple and easy no bake recipe that perfectly serves two portions.
Italians and people of the world: please do no hate me for making tiramisu eggless. I come in peace. This recipe is such a delight. It is so simple and no double boiler etc. needed to make a sabayon which means you can whip it up real easy and it will work very easily. You do need to chill it and allow it to set for a bit so the biscuits can soak up the coffee and cream but it is very sturdy making it simple and quick to whip up.
I have not only done it differently by making it eggless but I have made a coffee sauce to go with the dessert. It is literally the leftover soaking coffee liquid mixed with heavy cream, stirred together until combined and it is so so so good! I pour it over the tiramisu when serving and it makes everything so much more tastier. You could totally leave it out and the dessert would still be delicious but this way it is more saucy and very yummy. So let us get to it.
Tiramisu is a traditional Italian dessert made by layering ladyfinger sponge biscuits that are dunked in strong coffee with a mascarpone custard cream and topped with cocoa powder. This no bake dessert is such a treat and comes together easily.
A traditional tiramisu contains ladyfingers (savoiardi biscuits), egg yolks, sugar, coffee, mascarpone and cocoa powder. There are many variations to the recipe which can include coffee liquor, whipped cream, vanilla, orange zest, dark chocolate etc. The most common alcohol used in tiramisu is marsala wine but a lot of recipes also use creme de cacao and baileys Irish cream.
An eggless tiramisu is a tiramisu minus the eggs. This will stress out a lot of people (mainly the Italians) but trust me, this recipe is such a delight and perfect for those who have egg allergies or are vegetarian.
Recipes that feed 1-3 people are considered to be small serve recipes – in my books atleast. This recipe was originally made for one person but in all honesty it is perfect for 2 so you can get your love language across by making this easy recipe for date night.
To make this eggless tiramisu we need ladyfinger sponge biscuits and strong coffee. For the coffee I used instant coffee powder mixed with hot water and sugar. To make the mascarpone cream I used mascarpone cream, whipping cream, vanilla extract, pinch of salt. The top is dusted with cocoa powder (it must be unsweetened cocoa powder)
To make this tiramisu we need mixing bowls to beat the mascarpone cream and coffee mixture. I have layered this dessert in a 9 x 5 inch tin. You could use and 8 inch loaf tin as well. You will need a spoon or an offset spatula to level out the cream.
To make the coffee soak – We need to stir everything together until combined. Set it aside.
To make the mascarpone cream – In a bowl add the whipping cream, castor sugar, vanilla, salt and using an electric beater or whisk we want to beat it until thick and soft peaks. It will take a bit of time by hand but you could also do this in a stand mixer. Add the mascarpone and whip again until thick. We need stiff peaks here.
Assembly – In the tin add spoon of the the mascarpone mixture and spread it evenly. Dunk a biscuit into the coffee soaking liquid and place over the cream. Repeat until you have a single layer of the soaked biscuits. Spoon over half of the mascarpone and spread it out evenly. Add another layer of the biscuits soaked in the coffee. Top with the other half of the mascarpone and even it out with the back of a spoon or offset spatula. Transfer to the fridge and let it set for 30 mins minimum. In the mean time make the coffee sauce by mixing the ingredients in a jug until combined. When ready to serve dust the top with cocoa powder using a strainer. Scoop and serve with the coffee sauce as needed.
I like serving this tiramisu with a coffee cream sauce. It is so simple we literally mix the leftover black coffee soaking liquid with heavy cream and stir until smooth. Pour it over the tiramisu to make it extra saucy. This is a small serve dessert portion hence there should not be much leftovers however if you do have leftovers, wrap the tin in cling wrap and place in the fridge for up to 3 days. After which it will get dry so it would be advisable to consume it before that.
