Christmas Movie Recipe Inspiration #4 with the classic ham and cheese on rye bread with a malted rum milkshakes. This recipe is the easiest sandwich/appetizer you can make for the festive parties and makes for a very simple yet delicious sandwich.Â
Welcome to my brand new Christmas recipe series where I make foods/recipes from my favourite Christmas movies. We are on the fourth movie recipe with White Christmas and Ham & Cheese on Rye with Rum Milkshakes. If you missed the previous movies, check out them out in my recipes page.Â
Growing up I loved decorating the house in November for Christmas. Once it hit 15th November, my tree and lights were up, I might have taken time to put everything else up as the month progressed but the tree and lights set the mood and the vibes were in full swing. I would put off all the other lights in the house, in the evening and turn on the festive lights. Switch on my favorite christmas movie and in those days we needed to have CD’s, which I must say I did. Not much has changed since. I get started with my christmas movies the moment the tree and lights are up. As I’ve grown up, I have noticed the food scenes in these movies with more intent and honestly I love them so much it inspired me to recreate some of these recipes. Hence I am here at the brink of a new series and so excited to share my love for christmas movies and their food scenes with you.Â
The most famous food scene in the movie white Christmas is where Wallace explains to Betty how different foods make him dream of different things. Ham & Rye makes him dream of tall, cool blondes. Turkey makes him dream of brunettes, a little scat back side but sexy. And Liverwurst makes him dream of liverwurst. The only food he eats are sandwiches and the only thing he dream of are women…and liverwurst. Instead of buttermilk as the movie suggests I made the malted rum milkshakes from the beginning of the film.Â
The classic sandwich came to be known in the 18th century by an Irish immigrant to England, Patrick Connolly. However they were mainly served in gentleman’s clubs and pubs before becoming popular all over as a meal on the go. The most commonly served sandwich is ham, cheese, mustard on rye bread. But you can serve it with a fruit jam and grill them until golden and crispy. You could also add lettuce into the sandwich. But we have kept the recipe fairly simple here.Â
A malted milkshake is basically a milkshake made with malt powder (any of your choice), milk, ice cream and vanilla. However, some recipes also call for dark rum and a little goes a long way. It is classic diner style drink that is simple to make but hits all the spots.Â
To make the sandwich we need rye slice bread (or you can use any bread you like or have on hand), ham slices (I have used smoked ham but you can use pepper ham or honey cooked ham that is sliced thin), gouda slice cheese but any cheese you prefer, butter, mustard, cranberry jam (or any berry jam that you like which would pari well with the ham).
To make the malted rum milkshake we need milk, vanilla ice cream, vanilla extract, almond extract, freshly grated nutmeg, dark rum (you can leave this out if you are serving kids) and malt powder – I used milo but you can use horlicks or any other malt powder.Â
To make the sandwich we need a saute pan, flat spatula and knife. To make the milkshake we need a blender. If you are not grilling the sandwich you don’t need the saute pan but I love grilling them.Â
Butter both sides of the rye bread slices. Spread the mustard on one side and the cranberry sauce on the other. Layer on the ham slices and cheese, close and cook over low heat for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy on the outside. Remove from the heat and place in a serving plate.
To make the milkshake add all the ingredients except for the nutmeg into the blender and blend until smooth, pour into a glass and top with freshly grated nutmeg.Â
Serve the sandwich hot and the milkshake cold, it goes well together. The milkshake doesn’t take time to make but you can make it ahead to and store it in a glass jug, pour when ready to serve. You could assemble the sandwich together ahead of time and grill them on the pan just before serving as well. Once they are grilled I wouldn’t recommend storing it for very long as they will get soggy.
My next recipe will be based on the Christmas movie A Boy Called Christmas, make sure to stay tuned and subscribe to my newsletters to get notified when post new recipes.
