These crunchy chips are so simple to make with just 2 ingredients, thinly sliced onions and parmesan cheese. They are ready in under 30 minutes and such a delicious appetizer recipe.

I  was so tempted to try this recipe when I first saw it online mainly because I thought it was not going to work, so I had to prove to myself or the trend wrong. You can see the video I made for Simply Recipes here but I must say, this was such a winning recipe! OMG! I have made it 3 times since also cause I had extra cheese in the house but also because I wanted to make difference versions. The chips were so crunchy and delicious. The onion and parmesan cheese combination is such a winner. So let us get to it.

What are the viral onion chips? Why are the onion ring chips viral?

These low carb chips are so simple to make with only 2 ingredients needed to make them. They are viral on TikTok and other social media platforms because of how easy it is to make and the fact that they are so delicious. Chances are you have the ingredients in your kitchen to make it already. I first saw this recipe on Stella Drivas TikTok account and it looked SO GOOD which garnered her 19+ million views!! Since then so many creators have made it.

What ingredients do you need to make these viral onion chips?

To make these onion ring chips we need onions and parmesan cheese. I have also used seasonings like crushed black pepper, dried oregano, paprika, garlic powder. I have also made these with other dried herbs. A little spray of olive oil makes sure they crisp up real nice.

What equipment do you need to make these viral onion chips?

To cut the onions we need a mandolin or serrated knife to cut them very thin. The thinner they are the crispier they will get hence it is good to use a mandolin or slicer. I have baked this on a baking tray in the oven which is line with baking paper. Once the chips are baked it is essential to let it cool on the tray to firm up before cutting with a sharp knife.

How to make these onion chips?

Preheat the oven to 180℃ and line a baking tray/cookie sheet with parchment paper, set aside. Thinly slice the onions using a mandolin or a very sharp serrated knife. The thinner the slices the crispier the chips once they bake. Sprinkle half the cheese in an even layer on the lined baking tray. Add the onion slices on top. At this point add any seasoning you would like. Top with the remaining parmesan cheese and even out the layer. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the top is bubbling, golden and has a browned edges. Allow this to cool before cutting as it firms up once it cools down. Cut into pieces and serve on its own or with your favourite dip.

Serving these onion chips and storing the leftovers?

They are best eaten on the same day, I have enjoyed them thoroughly on its own but you can also enjoy them with your favorite dip as well. My mum enjoyed them with pizza sauce too.  They are perfect with a ranch, hummus, labneh etc. the leftovers can be stored in a container in the fridge and when ready to eat, warm it in the oven for a couple of minutes allow to cool, firm up and then enjoy while crispy.
