Christmas movie recipe inspiration #3 with my perfect sugar cookie recipe. The ONLY sugar cookie recipe you will need this festive season that is not only simple to make but delicious and hold its shape after baking.Â
Welcome to my brand new Christmas recipe series where I make foods/recipes from my favourite Christmas movies. We are on the third movie recipe with The Christmas Chronicles and Sugar Cookies. If you missed the previous movies, check out them out in my recipes page.Â
Growing up I loved decorating the house in November for Christmas. Once it hit 15th November, my tree and lights were up, I might have taken time to put everything else up as the month progressed but the tree and lights set the mood and the vibes were in full swing. I would put off all the other lights in the house, in the evening and turn on the festive lights. Switch on my favorite christmas movie and in those days we needed to have CD’s, which I must say I did. Not much has changed since. I get started with my christmas movies the moment the tree and lights are up. As I’ve grown up, I have noticed the food scenes in these movies with more intent and honestly I love them so much it inspired me to recreate some of these recipes. Hence I am here at the brink of a new series and so excited to share my love for christmas movies and their food scenes with you.Â
The movie Christmas Chronicles is on elf my favourite Christmas movies of all time. When I saw it a couple of years ago I was in love with the story line but more so I was in love with the Christmas vibe all through the movie. If there was one cookie I would associate with this film it would have to be these sugar cookies. They are so versatile and very simple to mix together.Â
They are soft and crunchy cut out cookies that can be iced and cut into any shape you like. These cookies are buttery and have a snap when you break them in half. Further more, the cookies can be made ahead do time and used as edible gifts/decorations to make during the holidays. They might not always have a snap but they can be crumbly, and thicker than a biscuit.Â
We need eggs to make this cookie dough. If you don’t eat eggs and need eggless cookies use orange juice or milk to make these cookies. The recipe needs 1 egg which is approximately 50gm in weight.Â
The cookies need butter, you can use an plant based butter to make this cookie recipe. The best butter is the best option as the flavor is what makes these cookies taste better.
You can use castor sugar or granulated white sugar to use them. I have tried using icing sugar as well. I have tried using brown sugar as well and it is delicious.Â
We need all purpose flour to make these cookies. You can use a glute free flour mix to make these cookies as well. I would not recommend using almond flour or any other flour to make this recipe as the storage and overall texture would be get altered.Â
I like to spice up the dough with vanilla extract, orange zest, nutmeg powder, cinnamon powder or even cardamom powder. You can use a little almond extract as well. Use what you prefer.Â
Classic sugar cookies need royal icing which sets and gets hard icing the cookies a crunchy snap. Check out my homemade royal icing 101 recipe here. But you can use any glaze or icing you like that sets firmly on the cookie once baked.Â
To make this cookie dough we need a bowl and a rubber spatula to mix it together. We also need a roll pin and baking paper to roll out the dough once it is made. Cookie cutters to make the cookies, I got my cookie cutters from Tavola Shop and they have a fantastic range of equipment for the festive season. A baking tray and baking paper to bake them in the oven. Once they are baked we need a few piping bags and a spatula to help ice the cookies.Â
In a mixing bowl add the butter and castor sugar, mix until combined. Add the egg and flavorings, mix again. Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until smooth and its formed a dough. Wrap in cling wrap and place in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 180℃, line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Roll the dough between two sheets of baking paper until 1/2 or 1/4 inch thickness. Cut them out using your cookie cutters and transfer the cut outs to the baking tray and bake for 9-10 mins. The baking time will depend on the thickness and size of the cookies hence the larger or thicker the cookie the longer the baking time, the smaller and thinner the cookies are the lesser the baking time. Transfer to a wire rack and allow it to cool completely before icing.
Ice the cookies with a classic royal icing, find the recipe here. Or you can use any glaze, ganache or melted chocolate to decorate these cookies. You can use icing sugar dusted on top as well. I love the cookies on their own. If you are turning them to baubles/decorations – before you bake them make tiny holes at the top of the cookie to run a small string into the cookie once its baked so you can hang them on the tree.Â
The cookie dough can be store in the freezer in the cling wrap and a zip lock bag for a week. You could cut out the cookies and freeze them in the tray wrapped well for a week as well. Let them thaw before baking. Once they are baked the cookies that are not iced can be stored for in air tight containers for 3 weeks. The iced cookies can be stored for upto 2 weeks. I would recommend, if you are making these cookies as decorations, add a little chili powder or pepper powder into the dough to ensure no one eats them off the tree.Â
My next recipe will be based on the Christmas movie White Christmas, make sure to stay tuned and subscribe to my newsletters to get notified when post new recipes.
