Affogato

The combination of vanilla ice cream, hot espresso and a little coffee liqueur makes for a delicious cooling drink or dessert in less than 5 mins.

The word Affogato means drowned or poached in Italian and it usually refers to vanilla ice cream scoops being drowned in espresso shots. I have made this recipe so many times, infact I am embarrassed to call this a recipe as it is so simple and doesn’t need any effort what so ever. It is perfect to serve at the end of meal as it is like a dessert and acts as a coffee as well. Even though traditional Affogato uses vanilla ice cream and coffee shots I am making a little upgraded version today.

To make the Affogato we need some good vanilla ice cream or Fior di latte gelato or vanilla gelato, espresso that is hot or a strong coffee shot and some coffee liqueur like Khalua/Baileys/Amarula/Irish cream. There is no fancy equipment needed to make this, I used a Moka pot to brew my espresso but use whatever you are comfortable with. I like serving it in little glasses as you can see the ice cream and coffee mixing which is kind of hypnotic.

There are many ways to serve this drink. Just as it is is fine, a little pinch of sea salt on the top, cocoa powder dusted on top, grated chocolate or chocolate shavings, my Everyday Chocolate Sauce would also work well here, a little Salted Caramel would take it to the next level or even some biscuits/chocolate wafers. Once the drink is made, it should be served immediately as the ice cream will melt. I would prefer to pour the hot espresso over the ice cream at the table when ready to eat.

Food Pairing –

I would serve this with a Chocolate Torte, some Brownies, Pancakes and even some French toast. This recipe is best served with sweet dishes as it has ice cream in it. Further more you can serve with this with some pound cake as well.

This is perfect during spring and summer to cool you down but give you a little kick as well. Now that we have covered how to make and serve this dessert/ drink let us make it. Happy Drinking Ninjas!
