Dahi Toast (VIRAL Baked yogurt bread)

Crunchy toast filled with a sweet yogurt custard that is baked until just set. Top with nuts and powdered sugar before slicing and serving warm. A simple recipe but delicious and its ready in under 20 minutes.

10 years old, I was 10 years old when I first made this recipe. I remember having one of those small table top oven toasters. They were compact but they were handy and did the job. There was an on and off button, no temperatures or knobs to fuss about with but just a timer. Back home we would eat “Wibbs” white slice bread and I remember making this recipe with that. Yogurt was from the dairy farm and fresh. I was just and wanted a snack, heard about this recipe from a friends who’s mum would make it for him and so I decided to make it myself.

21 years later, I am here sharing this recipe on my blog, it must admit it is not the same recipe that I made 21 years ago, there has been some developments and tweaks over the years etc. It is still one of my favourite snacks to make and honestly when I have a little yogurt left in the container I make the custard just to bake this recipe. You don’t need a lot of ingredients, patience or time to make it, now this is similar to the TikTok viral recipe trend that popped on all our screens a few months ago. But I’ve been making this for a very long time!

What ingredients do you need to make this Dahi Toast (Baked yogurt bread)?

Yogurt –

We need yogurt to make this recipe, it can be any you prefer. I like using a natural yogurt without any flavors so I can add any flavorings of my choice. You can use a berry yogurt or vanilla yogurt. If you want to keep this dairy free you can use a vegan yogurt as well. Check out my homemade yogurt recipe here.

Egg –

This makes the yogurt base a custard. If you don’t want to add eggs you can use a flax seed egg (1 tbsp flax seed powder mixed with 2 tbsp water) or egg replacer powder. You need this to create a custard like texture once it bakes.

Sweetener –

I have used condensed milk but this recipe works with sugar, honey, maple syrup or jaggery powder as well. You can use any sweetener you prefer and consume. I do like to dust the top with powdered sugar before serving, its a little sweet but looks pretty too.

Flavorings –

I love the addition of vanilla extract, lemon zest, cardamom powder and almond extract. You could use saffron, cinnamon powder, rose water, orange zest, etc.

Bread –

White slice bread is the best option here but you can use brown or multigrain slice bread as well.

Nuts –

I like to top the custard with sliced almonds, you can use pistachios, cashews or any seeds too.

What equipment do you need to make this Dahi Toast (Baked yogurt bread)?

A small bowl and whisk to mix the custard. The bread is baked in a tray in the oven. However:

You can make this over the STOVE –

The yogurt taste can be baked over the stove in a sauté pan with a lid. The flame must be kept low and the lid must fit the pan. The steam created will allow the custard to set and “bake” while the direct heat from the pan will toast the bread from the bottom. We cook it for 4 mins on the lowest heat with the lid and another 4-5 minutes without the lid on the lowest heat possible.

How to make this Dahi Toast (Baked yogurt toast)?

Preheat the oven to 180℃. Line a baking tray with parchment and set aside. Place four slices of bread the tray and using your fingers press the center of the bread down firmly. Leave a boarder around the edges of the sides, you should have a little well in each slice.

In a small bowl add the ingredients for the yogurt custard and whisk until smooth. Spoon the custard into the four slices of bread evenly. Top with nuts and bake for 7-8 minutes until the custard is set an the bread is toasted, golden brown. Remove from the tray, dust with icing sugar and cut into triangles. Serve it while warm.

I wouldn’t recommend storing it once made as the toast will get soggy and it is best warm. The custard cannot be made ahead of time as there is egg/a binding agent in the mixture.
