Filo Feta Rolls aka Cigars

Crunchy and golden on the outside, with soft feta cheese in the middle, topped with honey or sweet chili sauce, this hot appetizer recipe is so simple to make very delicious.

I love a simple recipe. Something that needs only 2-4 main ingredients to make. Hence it only seemed fitting to share these filo feta rolls recipe with you. They are so simple and honestly you might have most of the ingredients already in your kitchen pantry. If you have leftover filo pastry and want to use it then this recipe is the one for you. Using feta cheese is essential as the saltiness from the cheese cuts through the honey or sweet chili sauce.

This is the kind of recipe you can make on a week day when you are looking for something simple and quick to serve for your family, friends or just yourself as well. I would suggest making a few extra because when they are hot – they go down so fast you don’t realize you’ve eaten 6 in one go. You could also serve them with ketchup, hot sauce or any sweet and spicy sauce. Check out my hot honey sauce recipe for a better homemade serving sauce option.

What ingredients do you need to make these filo feta rolls?

We need filo pastry sheets, feta cheese, sesame seeds, melted butter. I have served it with honey and sweet chili sauce. A little black pepper on top with dried herbs is optional but so so good! I do a tiny sprinkle of flakey sea salt but honestly it recipe doesn’t need it as the feta is salty enough.

What equipment do you need to make these filo feta rolls?

To bake the rolls we need a baking tray, baking paper, brush for the melted butter. They are baked in the oven but you could also bake them in the air fryer.

How to make these filo feta rolls?

Preheat the oven to 180℃, line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Cut the feta into sticks, 1/2inch x 3inch in breadth and height. If the feta doesn’t cut into sticks it doesn’t matter you can use smaller pieces of feta assembled together. Brush a sheet of filo with the melted butter and fold over, cut the sheet into 4 squares and place the feta in each square at the end. Brush the edges with melted butter and roll away from you to create a cigar/roll/log. Transfer to the lined baking tray and cover with a damp tea towel. Repeat the process until all the pastry and feta is finished. Brush the tops with melted butter, sprinkle over the dried herbs, sesame seeds and bake for 20-23 minutes or until golden and crispy. Serve it hot with sweet chili sauce and honey.

Serving these filo feta rolls? Storing these filo feta rolls? Make ahead options:

They are best served hot with honey and sweet chili sauce. Feel free to serve them with any sauce of you choice but something sweet and spicy cuts through the salt. They can be assembled and stored in zip lock bags in the freezer for up to 1 month, when ready to serve, bake them frozen or deep fry until golden brown. I prefer baking them as they are lighter.

Notes

  • Do not wrap the cheese in the filo pastry tightly as it will burst out of the roll while baking.
  • Liberally brush the pastry with butter as this helps it get crispy once baked.
  • Bake them until golden and crusty, this might take time as the cheese can release a lot of liquid.
