These are some of my favorite ways to prepare for spooky season. Using healthy and wholesome ingredients, these are some of my go to halloween snacks that are perfect for kids and adults.
October means spooky season. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love a sugar filled candy treat like my leftover candy halloween monster cookies or the black forest fudge brownies but there is something ver yummy about having easy and wholesome snacks that are perfect for anyone and everyone. Yes, they might not be perfect for trick or treating but they are perfect to create a grazing platter for the house when you’ve got a bunch of people around or when you have a party as well.
A healthy alternative to halloween candy is basically a more wholesome treat/snack that is nutritious and has ingredients that are not processed.
Most often than not, halloween is a time when most of the treats shared are packed with sugar and processed ingredients that are refined and not nutritious. And while I love a good treat it makes sense to have some healthier treats around the house during gatherings to keep more wholesome options for people to reach for. In saying this I am not one to shame foods and suggest some to be healthier than others, however I am here to say anything eaten in moderation is key. While oranges (for example) are healthy if you eat 3 dozen in one go – it might not agree with your system.
So here is my take on homemade halloween treats that work. If you are not creative you will make your life a living nightmare and we don’t want that. It is good to plan ahead and have a mood board of some sort – check out my Pinterest mood board for some spooky season inspiration. This will help you start thinking about what you want to serve and what you can do. Getting creative does not mean spending a lot of money to bring very specific ingredients that you will use for one or two recipes. It means, finding ways to use things you have access to and making it work.
Truth is, if foods are not delicious then we cannot expect the snack to be delicious. For example, I like drawing jack o lantern faces on oranges to make mini pumpkins which look super cute but I make sure to get the best peeling oranges to ensure they are juicy, sweet and delicious. When working with textures using a pretzel stick with sliced cheese to create a witch broom sounds stupid but they look so cute and are very yummy, who doesn’t like pretzel and cheese? Same goes with sausages and ketchup, hot dogs make for very creepy and spooky fingers and the ketchup which makes it taste yummy also looks like blood.
I took two brown bread toasts sandwiched between peanut butter and topped with marshmallow and two tiny chocolate chips, cut into ghosts using a ghost shaped cookie cutter to make ghost nutterbutter sandwiches. Speaking of marshmallows, using a jumbo marshmallow and chocolate chips make a face. I also make deviled pumpkin eggs bi boiling eggs, mix the egg yolks with pumpkin puree to make the filling orange and pipe it back into the egg white cavity to make it look like pumpkins.
If you are thinking of making better healthier recipes then check out my no bake brownies, healthy apple cinnamon pancakes (cut into pumpkin shape), my flourless chocolate chip nut cookies are so simple to bake and delicious, cookie dough bark that is chewy and soft in every bite, 3 ingredient blends chocolate mousse, deviled eggs, my devils food cake recipe decorated like a grave yard with biscuit tombstones, a simple bone broth (served in a cutesy witches broth cauldron), crunch chocolate granola and much more.
Now that we have gone through my favorite ways to make treats spooky, you can have a look at the video on my socials but make sure to have fun with it. Don’t forget to follow along for more fun recipe inspiration. If you try out some of these spooky treats, don’t forget to share it with me on instagram so I can see how it turned out. I’d love nothing more than to chat with you on your cooking/baking.
