ONE Ingredient Silky Chocolate Mousse

This is a recipe that is perfect for a quick dessert with little effort needs just one ingredient. Good dark chocolate, I served it with whipped cream but that is optional.

A good chocolate mousse must be silky smooth, airy light and indulgent to say the least. Now his recipe is an adaptation of the master himself Heston Blumenthal who made this years ago and it went viral. I take no credits for this but I take all the credit for making and eating it. With 1 ingredient and a little time this recipe is absolutely delicious and decadent. Now I love serving this mousse with whipped cream and dark chocolate grated on top but you certainly don’t need to do that. It is delicious on its own.

What are the ingredients you need to make this ONE Ingredient Silky Chocolate Mousse?

As this is a one ingredient recipe we need THE BEST chocolate or even just a chocolate you like eating. We also need water to make this mousse. We do need ice to cool down the chocolate as it is beating to create the mousse like texture. Now you could add little whipped cream into the mousse and stir it around to create more air but that is optional. I would recommend serving the mousse with whipped cream and grated chocolate. A sprinkle of sea salt goes a long way too.

If you want to get fancy, you can add your favourite liquor instead of the water for ad added kick into the mousse. You can use coconut cream and vegan chocolate to keep this recipe plant based and make no mistake that is a fantastic gluten free dessert.

What equipment do you need to make this ONE Ingredient Silky Chocolate Mousse?

We melt the chocolate in the microwave in a medium sized bowl. I like using a larger bowl as I will make the mousse in the same bowl once the chocolate is melted. You can use a whisk to beat the melted chocolate and water together but I prefer using an electric hand beater – it is quicker. I would stay away from stand mixers as we don’t need to beat the chocolate that much and with such force.

How to make this ONE Ingredient Silky Chocolate Mousse?

In a medium mixing bowl add the chocolate and melt it in the microwave until smooth. I like doing this in 10 second intervals. Once it is melted, add the water into the melted chocolate and stir together. Let it cool down a little before we start beating it. In a large bowl add the ice and place the bowl of melted chocolate and water on top of the ice. Make sure the ice is touching the bowl. We start beating the mixture on low speed. This is a small amount of chocolate and we don’t want to over work it. The ice will cool down the chocolate and as we beat it we are adding air into the mixture. The cool temperature will trap the air bubbles creating a mousse like texture that will start to thicken. Once it gets to the texture of heavy cream switch off the beater and finish with a spatula. At this stage you can add a little heavy cream and give it one thorough beating. You can flavor this with vanilla, instant coffee, cardamom powder or even some cinnamon powder.

How to serve and store this ONE Ingredient Silky Chocolate Mousse?

Serve it with whipped cream, grated chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt. You could also serve it as it is with a sprinkle of sea salt. The beauty about this recipe is it is great to make ahead the day before. You can prepare it and pour the mousse into glasses or serving bowls, place int he fridge and garnish when ready to serve.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 2 minutes
Course Dessert, Sweet tooth
Cuisine British, French
Servings 2 People

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric beater
  • Spatula
  • Serving glasses

Ingredients

  • 50 gm Dark chocolate
  • 50 ml Water

Optional-

  • 25 ml Whipped cream
  • Dark chocolate grated
  • Sea salt flakes

Instructions

  • In a medium mixing bowl add the chocolate and melt it in the microwave until smooth. I like doing this in 10 second intervals.
  • Once it is melted, add the water into the melted chocolate and stir together. Let it cool down a little before we start beating it.
  • In a large bowl add the ice and place the bowl of melted chocolate and water on top of the ice.
  • Once it gets to the texture of heavy cream switch off the beater and finish with a spatula. At this stage you can add a little heavy cream and give it one thorough beating. We want it to be thick and just falling off the spatula when you lift it from the bowl. Pour into you serving glasses.
  • This is optional but you can serve it with whipped cream, grated chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt. You could also serve it as it is with a sprinkle of sea salt.

Notes

  • Don’t over beat the chocolate mixer as it can get grainy. If it does get grainy, add more melted chocolate into the mousse and stir together.
  • You can serve this with some biscuits or toasted nuts.
