Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread

Fudgy and soft chocolate banana bread that is eggless, has no sugar, no butter and no flour. It is a one bowl cake that is simple, healthy and very yummy. Not to mention it is perfect with a glass of milk.

Everyone loves a good banana bread recipe because we always have overripe bananas sitting in the kitchen. This recipe is more chocolate bread than banana bread and it doesn’t have a banana banana flavor. In fact, I have never liked the flavors of banana and chocolate combined. Don’t ask me why but I just never liked it. A friend of mine, Alan had made me a chocolate banana cake YEARS ago and I loved it. Never baked with it after that. Until this beauty.

This recipe is a simple one but honestly it is such a winner. The ingredients are so simple and customisable. You can make it vegan if you like and I used a gluten free flour mix because I was making it for my brother who is gluten free but you can use any flour you like. In saying this, the recipe is perfect to make on a Monday and have slices of it all through the week. It is fudgy, soft, tender and delicious.

What is banana bread?

Banana bread is also considered to be banana cake. However it is known to be a quick bread as it is most often than not made in one bowl with a whisk. The recipe doesn’t have frosting or a glaze and can be served warm. A classic banana bread consists of bananas, butter/oil, sugar, flour and baking powder. However there are a variety of flavors and add ons you can add into the recipe.

Is banana bread actually bread?

It is considered to be a quick bread as it is made in one bowl and whisk, commonly baked in a loaf tin resembling a loaf of bread. You can bake them in bund tins or any cake tins as well. Hence it is a non yeasted sweet bread that is made with leavening agents like baking powder and baking soda.

Is banana bread healthy?

Just because banana bread has bananas in it, it doesn’t mean that banana bread is healthy. Also what is the meaning of healthy? If you eat an entire loaf of cake or a tray of cookies that are healthier for you then they wont be healthy either. Hence this is a healthier for your recipe where the banana bread is made with more wholesome ingredients but anything in excess is not healthy for you.

Does banana bread have yeast?

No banana bread doesn’t not have yeast in it. Most banana breads contain raising agents such as baking powder and baking soda to help tie the batter a rise and make it fluffy once baked.

How to make banana bread healthy?

Many recipes suggest using oil instead of butter, almond flour instead of regular flour, less sugar etc etc. there are options to reduce the fat and sugar in the recipe but I wouldn’t recommend it, you are better of making a healthier recipe to start with or else you might not have a successful outcome.

Banana bread that is flavored with cocoa powder and chocolate chips to put it in simple words. Some recipes use a variety of chocolate chips as well.

What is healthy chocolate banana bread?

This banana bread is healthier for you as it is packed with all the good stuff. It is sweetened with the bananas itself, we add tahini and yogurt to give it some fat and the flour is gluten free flour. The chocolate element comes from cocoa powder and dark chocolate chips. It is healthier for your and definitely better for consumption.

What ingredients do you need to make this healthy chocolate banana bread?

Bananas

We need overripe bananas. The darker the banana peel the better, as there is no sweetener here to sweeten the cake we need the really sweet over ripe bananas.

Yogurt

I have used Greek yoghurt and this makes the banana bread really dense and delicious. You can use a plant based yogurt to keep this recipe vegan.

Tahini

I love the flavor of tahini and chocolate hence I used tahini but you can use any nut butter you prefer. I would suggest it should be runny hence you might have to warm it in the microwave.

Cocoa powder

I used a dutch processed cocoa powder but you can use cacao powder as well. It must be unsweetened cocoa powder.

Flour

I used a gluten free flour mix to make this recipe but you can use any flour, even regular all purpose flour or almond flour to make it (this makes it even more tender and soft), I also liekusign oat flour to make this cake.

Chocolate chips, baking powder, salt

We need the baking powder to give the batter a little bit of lift while baking. The salt brings out all the flavors of this healthy chocolate banana bread. The chocolate chips are non negotiable. You can use any you like I used vegan dark chocolate chips.

What equipment do you need to make this healthy chocolate banana bread?

To make the banana bread batter we need a bowl and whisk. I have baked the bread in a lined 9 inch loaf tin. You can bake it in an 8 inch loaf tin too. Further, I like baking them in muffins for 13-15 mins too.

Pour into lined tin and top with remaining 1/4 cup chocolate chips. Bake for 30-35 mins. Let it cool before taking removing from the tin and slicing.

Serving and storing this healthy chocolate banana bread?

I love serving this bread warm, you can serve it cold as well. It is yummy with a dollop of greek yogurt and fresh berries as well. The leftovers can be stored in a zip lock bag in the fridge for 4 days and in the freezer for 1 month. When ready to eat warm in the microwave for 15 seconds and enjoy.
