The easiest dessert recipe ever! A simple brown sugar honey butter slathered onto thick bread slices, baked until caramelized and golden. Serve it with whipped cream and you’ve got yourself a quick and yummy sweet treat.
Sometimes the simplest of recipes gives the deepest of satisfaction. This recipe is one of those times. I am not the inventor for this, I saw this video on TikTok, linked here and I was immediately hooked! I love trends that go viral which are realistic and doable. This recipe was just waiting to be made, let alone devoured.
This recipe needs only 5 ingredients and that includes salt. I mean, it is such a fancy and elegant dessert that needs very little effort, also the chances are you have all these ingredients in your kitchen right now. Recipes like these are the best to make for a quick dessert or to make as a mid night snack or when you are craving something simple but delicious. It takes less than 30 minutes to prepare and bake, just saying.
Honey butter toast is exactly what it sounds like. It is toast that is slathered on all sides in a honey, brown sugar, butter spread, baked until golden. Once it cools down the caramel on the toast sets, giving it a crispy outside and a fluffy bread center. Now it is yummy on its own but I did what Yasmine aka The Chef Mine on TikTok did, I served it up with whipped cream and caramel sauce.
To make the this recipe we need brioche bread or thick slices of white bread. To make the butter spread we need butter, honey and brown sugar. A little salt goes a long way. I have served this with whipped cream and caramel sauce but you don’t have to.
If you want to keep this recipe vegan, use a plant based butter spread and replace the honey with maple syrup (it wont be honey butter toast anymore though it will be maple butter toast). To keep this dessert gluten free you can use any gluten free unsliced white bread loaf. I have made this recipe replacing the brown sugar with castor sugar and I was not happy with the flavor and the over all color of the toast once baked.
To mix the butter spread mixture we need a mixing bowl and rubber spatula. I have used an offset spatula to spread the butter onto the toast, you can use a spoon of a butter knife. We will need baking paper and a baking tray to bake these in the oven. To make the whipped cream we need a bowl and electric beater. I have used my homemade salted caramel recipe but you can use store bought. We need a wire rack to cool the toast down once baked, you cannot skip on this step.
Start by preheating the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with parchment and set aside. Cut the crusts off the bread slices, ideally use a brioche or unsliced white bread. In a bowl add the butter, brown sugar and mix with a spatula. Add salt, vanilla, honey and mix. Spread this butter mixture evenly over all the sides of the slices of bread, top, bottom and sides. Place them on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes, then remove from the oven and gently flip each piece of bread. Bake again for 8 more minutes. Take the tray out of the oven and let the toast sit for about 2 minutes on the tray. With the help of a spatula transfer each toast to a wire rack to finish cooling. They will be very hot and soggy, but as they cool down they will get crispy. Allow to cool for 8-10 minutes.
You have to let the toast cool down before serving or eating as the sugar is hot and caramel like, so it will be soggy. As it cools down it will get hard as the sugar will firm up. Serve it with vanilla whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce. It is the perfect dessert to make in little time. The toast can be stored in air tight containers away from moisture at room temperature for 2 days. After which it will become very tough to eat.
