A classic bread and butter pudding recipe that is simple but so comforting. This single serve recipe is the perfect dessert to bake over a weekend with leftover slices of bread. Serve it with cold cream, fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar.
Bread and butter pudding is one of the most comforting desserts to have. I absolutely love the custardy bread with the crusty golden sugary bits on top. This recipe is a single serving recipe which makes it even easier to make but more so more delicious as it needs little effort and very few ingredients. Most of which you will already have in your kitchen pantry.
Bread and butter pudding is a traditional pudding recipe that is comforting and simple. It comes from the British dessert hall of fame and is one of the easiest yet tastiest sweet treat recipes to make. The dish is most often than not layered in tin and baked in it. Serve it with cold cream, custard, fresh berries or a simple dusting of powdered sugar.
A traditional bread and butter pudding recipe is made with eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, stale bread (this is the key! As it soaks up the custard much more making a super fluffy bread and butter pudding). It can also have nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, cinnamon, nutmeg, almonds etc.
There are broadly 3 types of puddings, baked, steamed and boiled. This is a recipe for a baked pudding. The crème caramel is a recipe example for steamed and baked pudding.
Single serve recipes are those which serve one portion. When baking this is not easy to achieve as most baked goods feed at least 4-6 people, things like cakes, cookies and breads aren’t commonly made for single serve options. However this recipe is a single serve, arguably it feeds 2 though. Then again 1 serving is 2 portions so we are in the clear here.
To make this singe serve. Bread and butter pudding we need to make a custard which consists of egg, milk, cream, vanilla and sugar. If you don’t have cream use milk all the way. The bread I have used is stale white bread slices but you cause any stale bread to make it around 3/4-1 cup of bread pieces.
You can add raisins, chocolate chips, cashews or any assorted nuts you like. I like to top the bread and butter pudding with granulated sugar and a little cinnamon but you could do almond extract, cardamon or any. Other flavor of your choice.
To make the custard we need a bowl and whisk. I cut up the slice brad into cubes but you can tear it apart as well. I like soaking and baking the bread and butter pudding in a ramekin. You can use any small baking dish.
Preheat the oven to 180℃ and butter a ramekin dish, set aside. In a small mixing bowl add the eggs, sugar, vanilla, cream and milk. Whisk until smooth. Cut up the pieces of bread and place in the ramekin. Pour over the custard and allow the bread to soak into the custard for 5-10 mins. Place on a baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes until the top is golden and crusty. You can bake this in the microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds at 30 second intervals. Serve it warm.
Bread and butter pudding is best served warm straight out of the oven. I like to dust it with a little powdered sugar but you can do cinnamon powder as well. A drizzle of cold cream pairs well with it and add fresh berries or sliced bananas if you have them.
This pudding is best served on the day it is made. Also it is a single serve dessert meaning it is a very small portion making for little to no leftovers. Having said this, if you have any leftovers you can cover the ramekins with aluminum foil and store in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, warm it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds and enjoy it warm with cold cream.
