There’s something magical about these chocolate crinkle cookies. With their snowy powdered sugar coating, beautifully cracked tops, and rich, fudgy centers, they’re one of the most recognizable and loved chocolate cookies, these cookies are guaranteed to impress, I also like to stuff each cookie sometimes with a piece of chocolate to have melting centers once baked. Made with oil instead of butter, the cookies stay wonderfully soft and moist while delivering an intense chocolate flavor. The final dusting of powdered sugar creates the signature crackled appearance that’s both festive and irresistible.

What Makes Chocolate Crinkle Cookies Crack?

The signature crackled top is what gives these cookies their name. As the cookie dough bakes, it expands while the thick sugar coating stays on the surface. This causes the powdered sugar to split apart, revealing the rich chocolate cookie underneath. Rolling the dough generously in both castor sugar and powdered sugar helps create bold, defined cracks while adding a delicate sweetness to every bite.

Ingredients You’ll Need

To make these chocolate crinkle cookies you will need vegetable oil, brown sugar, castor sugar, egg, vanilla, all purpose flour, cocoa powder, corn starch, baking soda, salt. To roll the cookies we need powdered sugar and castor sugar.

Equipment you’ll need

We need to whisk the oil and sugar well before adding the egg, this can be done in a stand mixer or using an electric mixer but I have used a bowl and whisk as well. It just requires a little elbow grease from your end. Further more you will need a spatula to finish mixing the batter together, I have used a baking tray lined with baking parchment and a cookie scoop to portion out the dough. We used the palm of our hands to roll the dough into a ball and dunking it in sugar before baking. They need to be cooled on a wire rack once baked.

Tips for Perfect Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

  1. Use Good Quality Cocoa Powder – Since chocolate is the star of this recipe, using a high-quality cocoa powder will give you a richer, deeper flavor.
  2. Don’t Over bake – The cookies should still appear slightly soft in the center when they come out of the oven. They continue cooking as they cool, creating that irresistible fudgy texture.
  3. Coat the Dough Well – A generous coating of sugar is essential for achieving dramatic cracks and the classic snowy appearance.
  4. Bake in a Preheated Oven – Starting with a fully preheated oven helps the cookies spread and crack properly.

How to Store Chocolate Crinkle Cookies?

Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze the baked cookies for up to 2 months. Simply thaw them at room temperature before serving.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 12 minutes
Course cookie, Finger food, High Tea, Sweet tooth, tea time
Cuisine American
Servings 10 cookies

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk/electric beater/stand mixer
  • Spatula
  • Baking tray
  • Baking parchment
  • Cookie scoop

Ingredients

  • 75 ml oil
  • 100 g brown sugar
  • 50 g castor sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Pinch of salt
  • 45 g cocoa powder
  • 100 g flour
  • 15 g corn starch
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • For coating - 50g powdered sugar + 50g castor sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 165 deg C, line a baking tray with parchment, the cookies will spread little so its good to have another tray as back up to bake them in two trays.
  • In a mixing bowl add the oil and sugars, whisk until pale and creamy using a whisk, electric beater or stand mixer.
  • Add the egg, vanilla and whisk again until smooth.
  • Add the dry ingredients and switch to a spatula to fold the ingredients together until thick and combined. We don’t want any dry pockets of flour.
  • Scoop out the dough into your palms and roll to form a ball. Dunk into castor sugar and roll around, dunk into the powdered sugar and roll again, place on the baking tray and repeat.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just set and the top has risen, cracked and puffy. I like them softer so under bake them, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Serve with a glass of milk.

Notes

  • Recipe inspired by Cloudy Kitchen.
  • Do not over mix the batter once the dry ingredients are incorporated as it can make the cookies dense.
  • Over baking will make the cookies dry and tough.
  • I like the cookies to weigh around 30-40g, use a cookie scoop to help with this.
