Homemade VIRAL Dot Cake Recipe (Tiktok Trend)

This easy and simple cake recipe is a TikTok trend that is viral, it is single serve layer of fluffy cake, topped with a vanilla buttercream frosting and covered in nonpareils aka colored round sprinkles that are crunchy in every bite. The small size makes it perfect as a small serve dessert recipe.

If you have social media you would have seen this trend online by now. It kicked off in the early parts of May 2026 (this month) and unlike a lot of fun fads this one has only been growing so naturally I was pressured into trying this one out and I am so GLAD THAT I DID. Its such a winning sweet treat and comes together very easily especially since I use my small server recipes to bake them. I have made a chocolate version but before we get into the recipe let us look at the trend and the origin a little.

The Original Dot Cake –

We must ALWAYS give credit where credit is due and the Dot Cake was originally created by the bakery called “The DotCakes” based out of Roslyn, New York. The vitality came with the Dot Cake Cups aka “Dotcups” which became an overnight trend, they were stocked at the Butterfield Market in New York’s upper east side. According to People, their overall aesthetic, ASMR crunch and the fact you can eat them directly with a spoon made them an overnight sensation. The Dotcups are 8 oz each and can be purchased in batches of 4 customized options. They usually have classic vanilla, chocolate, red velvet or vanilla chip, they cost $32 for 4 cakes.

Cultural similarities with the Dot Cake –

There are a few familiar elements in this trend that run across other recipes like the fairy bread from Australia – a slice of white white, with a slather of room temperature butter and covered in sprinkles. Or the cortadillo from Mexico – a sheet cake that is sold is local bakeries topped with a colorful pink or rainbow colored sprinkles.

What is the dot cake trend? Why is the dot cake viral? Why is dot cake trending on TikTok?

This dessert has become a global phenomenon thanks to the influencer Danielle Pheloung who got 7+ million views for her video trying three flavors of the viral Dot cake. If it weren’t for her video we would probably be in the dark about this delicious treat. The cake is viral because of its small serve size, the fact that is has a layer of moist cake, rich and creamy frosting paired with the satisfying crunch of the thick layer of sprinkles. Also you can eat it with a spoon directly making it very easy to eat on the go anytime, anywhere.

Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • A lot of other recipes make a large sheet cake which you cut into rounds and fit into moulds/jars, this recipe is a single serve portion that fits into a standard 5 inch ramekin that is wonderful small serve option if you don’t want lot of cake leftover
  • It is a homemade version of the viral trend everyone is obsessed about, and it tastes WAY better than anything you can probably get your hands on (unless you can buy the original)
  • The single serve size is so convenient, adorable, portable, and perfect for yourself after dinner
  • It is genuinely so easy to make and uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry

Ingredients you need:

I have made a chocolate dotcup dot cake recipe. This is my go to single serve chocolate cake recipe that is an oldie but a Goldie, it also happens to be eggless making the fluffiest, moistest, most tender and delicious sweet treat of all time. We need yogurt, milk, oil, vinegar, brown sugar, baking soda, flour, cocoa powder, salt. For the buttercream frosting we need butter, icing sugar (powdered sugar), vanilla. Obviously we need the sprinkles aka nonpareils.

What sprinkles are used for dot cakes? Best Sprinkles for Dot Cakes

The sprinkles most commonly used for viral TikTok dot cakes are rainbow nonpareils. They are tiny round ball-shaped sprinkles, crunchy in texture, brightly colored, smaller than regular round sprinkles. They create the signature crunchy top layer, “dot” appearance, ASMR spoon-crack effect seen in TikTok videos. PRO TIP: depending on the quality of the sprinkles, they tend to bleed their color very fast, so it is advisable to freeze the cake for 20 minutes before coating with the sprinkles to ensure the color doesn’t bleed into the frosting easily.

Can I make dot cake without nonpareils?

Yes you can make a dot cake without nonpareils. The texture and look will change a bit, but there are several good substitutes depending on the style you want. Alternatively you can use Jimmies, they are the longer sprinkles that are softer and still rainbow colored, giving you a crunch but a lesser one that is easier for those with sensitive teeth.

Equipment you need:

To make the cake batter we need a small mixing bowl and fork. I have baked this cake in a 4 inch round tin lined with baking paper in an oven. There are a few baking options with this recipe. And I will discuss them below. For the frosting we need a mixing bowl and whisk since this is a small portion can make it without a mixer. I like to spoon over the sprinkles as opposed to flipping the cake over a plate filled with sprinkles as this way I don’t get the rest moist/damp with the frosting – creating wastage.

How to Make Dot Cake Cups?

For the cake – Preheat the oven to 180℃, line a 5 inch baking tin with baking paper and brush with oil. Set aside. In a small bowl add the wet ingredients and mix until combined. Add the dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 15-18 minutes until risen and tooth pick inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs. Remove from the tin and let it cool completely before frosting.

For the buttercream frosting – Whip the butter with a whisk in a bowl until pale, light, creamy and fluffy. Add the vanilla, powdered sugar and whisk again until smooth.

Assemble – transfer the cooled chocolate cake to a ramekin making sure it fits snuggly into the mould, spread over the frosting and even it out with a knife. Add the sprinkles on top with a spoon making sure to cover the surface generously. Serve with a spoon and enjoy.

Can I make dot cakes ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble them, seal the jars, and refrigerate for up to 3 to 4 days. They actually get better after a few hours in the fridge once everything settles together

How long do dot cakes last? Storage Tips:

They are best eaten the same day as the sprinkles can bleed their color into the frosting and cake. But the flavor or texture doesn’t change the next day. Since this is a small serve recipe it won’t keep long as it is delicious and addictive to say the least. Fridge: Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days. The mascarpone cream firms up nicely in the fridge. Room temp: Viral Dot Cakes are best enjoyed within 2 hours if left out since mascarpone is dairy-based. Freezer: Freeze unfrosted cake rounds for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in fridge, then assemble fresh. Note: Sprinkle colors may bleed slightly into the cream after 24 hours. Be sure to assemble them close to serving time for the prettiest look. Alternatively, you can freeze the baked cake layers (without frosting) for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then assemble fresh before serving.
