Pumpkin Banana Bread Recipe (Moist & Easy)

This moist pumpkin banana bread combines two fall favorites into one easy, spiced quick bread recipe. No mixer needed — ready in one bowl!

If you’ve been following along for any amount of time, you know two things about me: I have an undying love for banana bread, and the second the weather even *thinks* about cooling down, I am elbow-deep in pumpkin puree. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before these two obsessions collided into one glorious loaf — and that, my friends, is how this pumpkin banana bread recipe was born.

This is hands-down one of the most comforting and simple recipes to bake during fall. It’s moist, it’s spiced, it’s got that deep caramelized banana flavor with just enough pumpkin spice warmth to make your kitchen smell like a candle store. Whether you’re baking for a cozy weekend brunch, meal-prepping breakfasts for the week, or just want an excuse to use up those spotty bananas sitting on your counter, this recipe checks every single box. Let’s get into it.

What Is Pumpkin Bread?

Pumpkin bread is a soft, moist quick bread made with pumpkin puree, warm fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s a cozy season staple that shows up everywhere from coffee shop counters to Thanksgiving tables, and for good reason — the pumpkin puree keeps the crumb incredibly tender while adding a subtle earthy sweetness that pairs perfectly with warm spices (check out my homemade pumpkin spice recipe here). Unlike pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread is meant to be sliced, toasted, slathered in butter, and enjoyed any time of day, which is exactly why it’s become such a fall baking icon. You can find my go to pumpkin bread recipe here.

What Is Banana Bread?

Banana bread is the OG quick bread that basically every home baker has a version of tucked away in their recipe box. It’s made using overripe, spotty bananas mashed into the batter, which naturally sweetens the bread and gives it that signature moist, dense-but-tender texture we all love. Banana bread is one of those forgiving, foolproof recipes and it’s the perfect way to use up those bananas you forgot about on the counter instead of tossing them. Check out my go to recipe here.

Why Is It Called Bread Even Though It Has No Yeast?

This is a question I get asked constantly, so let’s clear it up! Pumpkin banana bread falls into a category called “quick bread,” which simply means it’s leavened with baking soda and/or baking powder instead of yeast. Traditional yeast breads need time to rise and proof, sometimes hours, because yeast is a living organism that needs time to ferment and produce gas bubbles. Quick breads, on the other hand, get their rise almost instantly in the oven thanks to the chemical reaction between baking soda/powder and the acidic ingredients in the batter (like mashed banana or brown sugar). It’s called “bread” because of its shape, texture, and how it’s baked in a loaf pan and sliced — but the “quick” part refers to the fact that you can mix it up and get it in the oven in minutes, no waiting around for dough to rise. Basically: all the cozy bread vibes, none of the yeast-related patience required.

What Is Pumpkin Banana Bread?

So what happens when you combine the best of both worlds? You get pumpkin banana bread — a hybrid quick bread that takes the moist, dense texture of classic banana bread and layers it with the warm spiced flavor of pumpkin bread. Think of it as your favorite banana bread recipe that got a delicious fall makeover. The pumpkin puree and mashed banana work together to create an ultra-moist crumb, while the fall spices bring that signature cozy, autumnal flavor. It’s the perfect two-in-one treat for anyone who can’t decide between banana bread and pumpkin bread (honestly, why choose?).

Why You’ll Love This Pumpkin Banana Bread Recipe

There are so many reasons this recipe has become a fall favorite around here, but let me break down my top picks:

  1. It’s incredibly moist – Between the mashed banana and pumpkin puree, this bread stays soft and tender for days (if it even lasts that long).
  2. One bowl, minimal effort – This is a simple, no-mixer-required recipe that comes together in one bowl, making cleanup a breeze.
  3. Perfectly spiced – The warm blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves gives every bite that signature pumpkin spice flavor without being overpowering.
  4. Great way to use up ripe bananas – No more tossing those spotty bananas — put them to good use here.
  5. Freezer-friendly – This bread freezes beautifully, so you can bake a loaf (or two) ahead and always have a slice ready to go.
  6. Versatile – Enjoy it plain, toasted with butter, or dressed up with a cream cheese glaze for an extra special treat.

What Ingredients Are Needed to Make This Pumpkin Banana Bread?

  • Ripe bananas – the riper and spottier, the better. This is where all that natural sweetness and moisture comes from.
  • Pumpkin puree – make sure you’re using pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which has added sugar and spices already mixed in.
  • All-purpose flour – gives the bread its structure.
  • Baking soda – our leavening agent that helps this quick bread rise without yeast.
  • Salt – to balance and enhance all the flavors.
  • Pumpkin spice – a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves (or a pumpkin pie spice blend) for that signature cozy fall flavor. Check out my homemade recipe here.
  • Granulated sugar and brown sugar – using both adds sweetness while brown sugar brings extra moisture and a hint of molasses flavor.
  • Eggs – help bind the batter and give the bread structure.
  • Melted butter or oil – for richness and to keep the crumb moist. Oil tends to yield a slightly more moist result, while butter adds flavor.
  • Vanilla extract – rounds out the flavor beautifully.
  • Optional – mix-ins like chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, or pecans are also fantastic if you want to add a little texture and extra indulgence to your loaf.

What Equipment Is Needed to Make This Bread?

You don’t need any fancy equipment for this recipe, which is part of why it’s such a great go-to. Here’s what I recommend having on hand, a 9×5-inch loaf pan – this is the standard size for this recipe and will give you that classic bread shape, parchment paper – lining your pan makes for super easy removal once the bread is baked and cooled, mixing bowls – one large bowl for the wet ingredients and one medium bowl for the dry ingredients, a whisk and a rubber spatula – for mixing the batter together without overworking it, a fork or potato masher – for mashing your ripe bananas until smooth. No stand mixer or hand mixer needed here — this is a true one-bowl (or two-bowl) mix-by-hand recipe, making it perfect for beginner bakers.

Pro Tips on Making the Perfect Pumpkin Banana Bread

  1. Use very ripe bananas: The spottier and softer, the better. Overripe bananas are sweeter and mash more easily, giving your bread the best flavor and texture.
  2. Don’t overmix the batter: Once you add the dry ingredients to the wet, mix just until combined. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, which can lead to a dense, tough loaf instead of a tender one.
  3. Measure your flour correctly: Spoon your flour into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife rather than scooping directly from the bag, which can pack in too much flour and dry out your bread.
  4. Use pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling: This ensures you’re controlling the sweetness and spice levels yourself.
  5. Tent with foil if the top is browning too quickly: If the top of your loaf is getting dark before the center is fully baked, loosely tent it with aluminum foil for the remaining bake time.
  6. Check doneness with a toothpick: Insert it into the center of the loaf — it should come out with a few moist crumbs, not wet batter.
  7. Let it cool before slicing: I know it’s tempting to dive right in, but letting the bread cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes, then fully on a wire rack, helps it set and makes for cleaner slices.
  8. Add mix-ins for extra flair: Chopped walnuts, pecans, or chocolate chips folded into the batter take this bread to the next level. I like doing sliced almonds and granulated sugar on top for that extra crunch.

Storage and Serving Tips:

This pumpkin banana bread stores beautifully, making it a great make-ahead option for busy mornings or fall gatherings. To store at room temperature: Wrap the cooled loaf tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days on the counter. To store in the fridge: If you’d like it to last a bit longer, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Just note that refrigeration can sometimes dry out quick breads slightly, so make sure it’s well wrapped. To freeze: This bread freezes wonderfully. Wrap the cooled loaf (or individual slices) tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag or container. It will keep well for up to 3 months. To thaw, simply leave it at room temperature for a few hours, or pop individual slices in the microwave for a quick warm-up.

Serving suggestions:

This bread is delicious on its own, but here are a few of my favorite ways to serve it: Toasted with a generous spread of butter or cream cheese, Drizzled with a simple vanilla or cream cheese glaze for a more indulgent treat, Paired with a warm cup of coffee or chai for the ultimate cozy fall snack, Served as part of a fall brunch spread alongside eggs and fresh fruit
