Cosmopolitan

This elegant cocktail is a simple drink that not only looks pretty but also tastes delicious. It is vodka based but the orange liqueur adds a refreshing flavor to the palate.

Mothers day is upon us and honestly I must mention, my mother is not someone who likes fancy cocktails. She is someone who prefers her drink as a drink and not a cocktail. But since vodka is the choice most often it seemed only fitting to get a simple, elegant vodka cocktail recipe going for the occasion.

This drink doesn’t need much as everything is poured into a cocktail shaker and shaken until cold. The cocktail does call for a citrus vodka and I have used plain vodka here. You can use any you like but if you get your hands on a citrus flavored vodka then use that. I’ve also use orange liqueur and it is fragrant and refreshing to say the least. The cranberry juice gives it this beautiful color while the lime juice balances out the sweetness and makes it a little cloudy. Which is what we want with the drink. I’ve used fresh lime juice to make this and store bought cranberry juice. You can use any you have or like. This cocktail can also be made with a little grapefruit juice as well. I haven’t tried the versions with strawberry/raspberry juice but they are substitutes online. Some recipes allow for gin instead of vodka but this is traditionally a vodka based cocktail.

Speaking of traditional, a cosmopolitan is served in a glass that is similar to that of a martini glass but if you don’t have the glass you can use a martini glass or any glass you have. You can garnish with cocktail with an orange peel twist or a lemon peel twist. Some recipes call for lime slices as well. I left my glass without any garnish as the drink is elegant and dainty on its own.

Food pairing –

The sharp cocktail pairs well with cheeseboards in charcuterie platters as well. Soft cheeses like brie, camembert, ricotta and cream cheese are great accompaniments with crackers and chips. You could serve shrimps with a cocktail sauce or shrimp salad with a basic vinaigrette, roasted salmon or smoked Salmon as well. This recipe really goes well with my Stilton and squash tart recipe. But don’t get to elegant on the food as the drink also pairs well with burgers and mini sliders making for a great party canapé situation. In sweets you can pair this with vanilla ice cream, gelato and fresh berries, a Chocolate torte and chocolate brownies to name a few.

Now that we have talked about how to make this cocktail, let us get shaking. Happy Drinking Ninjas!
